A PUB in York has created a Braille copy of its menu to help customers who have sight problems.

The Black Swan Inn, in Peasholme Green, is thought to be the first and only pub in the city to provide such a menu.

Stephanie Macklewain-Cross, landlady of the Black Swan, said: “We noticed that a lot of people coming into the pub had difficulty reading the menu, so we provided an extra large print menu. One day we had a party come in where two were blind or partially-sighted and other members of the group read the menu to them.

“On our bar we have a collection tin for York Blind and Partially Sighted Society, so I rang them and asked how difficult it would be to have a menu translated into Braille – and it isn’t difficult at all.”

Stephanie emailed the pub’s menu to the society, it was translated into Braille, and she received the translation in the post.

Stephanie said: “I think it’s really nice to be able to say to someone partially-sighted ‘would you like a menu too?’. It would be great if every pub in York had a Braille menu so that people with sight problems have a massive choice.”
