A COMMUNITY centre in York is set to re-open after undergoing a £200,000 refurbishment.

Work at the Melbourne Centre, partly funded through the sale of the Kent Street coach park, includes a new accessible entrance to the centre, improvements to electrical and heating systems and changes to parking arrangements to improve safety.

The centre is to be run by training provider Blueberry Academy, which has taken out a 15 year lease on the building, and will host a range of programmes including children’s activities, fitness activities and arts classes.

City of York Council’s executive member for leisure, Coun Nigel Ayre, who is visiting the centre tomorrow, said it would be an excellent new facility that the whole community could make use of and enjoy.

James Whiteside, Liberal Democrat candidate for Fishergate at the May elections, said that although a few groups had used the Melbourne Centre before, it had been essentially empty most of the time.
