York Indoor Bowls Club ‘A’ team finished their division one season in fourth place, 12 points adrift of champions North Cave.

And for York ‘B’ it was seventh place in the second division, though the ‘B’ team challenged their illustrious counterparts to an end of season match and were so close to beating them, only going down by nine shots in the club’s inaugural Over-55s League Challenge match.

The second division side led 17-14 after five ends but the ‘A’ ranks got the upper hand over the next five ends and led 37-30 on aggregate, holding on to the lead until the end where the final score was 79-70.

Graham Instone’s team got the highest winning rink prize for the ‘A’ team after pulling away from the ninth end against Ken Robinson’s team, winning all but three of the remaining ends to move the score from 10-7 to finish at 28-11.

The ‘B’ team’s highest winning rink prize came from Ron Kirkpatrick’s team who got off to a good start.

They led Fred Clayden’s rink 10-1 after eight ends before Clayde’s men got back into the game with a single then a five.

After that, Kirkpatrick’s rink had the upper hand and responded well to dropping a three on the 19th end which made the score 19-14 by scoring a single, then a two, to finish 22-14.

The ‘A’ team’s only other winning came from Malcolm Thompson’s team but only just after Pete Grosvenor’s side countered well.

Trailing 14-7 after 13 ends all looked lost, but they went into the last leading 19-17, only to drop a five to give the ‘A’ team a welcome 22-19 victory.

The ‘B’ team’s other winning rink came from Bob Blackburn’s team against the side led by Barry Walker. Down 9-6 after ten ends, Blackburn’s rink picked up ten shots from four winning ends to lead 16-9 only to drop six shots over the following five ends to hold a slender 16-15 lead with two ends left. But they held their nerve by picking up singles to finish 18-15.
