YOUR interesting analysis of the prospects for the May 5 council elections in York (The Press, April 5) was wrong in one respect in that the Green Party vote in York Central at the General Election was actually one of the highest in Yorkshire.

This reflects higher levels of support in the city for the Green Party, even when our votes were squeezed by ‘Cleggmania’ following the TV debates that excluded the Green leader Caroline Lucas.

Many people vote differently at national and local level. At the last local elections, Greens were very close to gaining seats in Micklegate and in second place in Clifton and Heslington.

Following the experience of the past year, many are disillusioned with all the main parties and would like to see councillors who will put the future of York ahead of narrow party interests and political mud-slinging.

The Greens are standing 42 candidates in these elections, almost one in every seat. Many people are impressed by the record of our Fishergate councillors and support the notion that more Green councillors will make a new Council a better council.
