York tops poll of favourite small cities

YORK has topped a poll of favourite small cities and towns in Great Britain.

The city took top spot in a survey conducted for travel publisher Rough Guide. Whitby was seventh.

York beat off competition from other hugely popular destinations including Bath, Brighton, Chester and St Ives, which made up the remainder of the top five.

The poll, conducted by YouGov, asked about 2,000 adults to name their favourite small town or city and they said York’s history, architecture and people added to the general great feel to the city.

A Rough Guides spokeswoman said the survey was conducted to highlight the huge number of destinations that hold an appeal for tourists outside Britain’s main cities.

John Yeomans, chairman of the Visit York tourism partnership, said: “York truly is the jewel in the Yorkshire crown.”

Was the survey based on tourism alone, or did it include what residents think?

I thank my lucky stars that I was born in York and not some of the other places I have visited. Whenever I am asked where I come from people usually reply that they love York.
Having spent my 3 score years and 10 here I am of the opinion that as locals we do not always appreciate what we have. e.g. I was turned 50 before I went to the top of the Minster!

There are locals left in York to ask?

I'm a local and very proud of York. 20 years ago people used to ask me where I was from and when I told them York they would ask "wheres that?". Now when I tell people their reply is "Ohh nice, you are lucky!".
