YORK ABC fighter Brady Coombes’ bid for National Junior ABA Championship glory during his first year of boxing ended in a tight semi-final defeat.

The “Clifton Cobra” lost to a majority decision against Ashley Shaw from the Millennium Club in Rotherham.

Coombes, 16, has only fought nine times since taking up the sport and pushed Shaw all the way in the 46kg contest.

Afterwards, pleased York ABC coach Billy Wilson said: “Brady landed lots of solid shots and has done really well against fighters with more experience than him.”

Under-13 pair Charlie Hall and Henry Andrews, meanwhile, enjoyed victories during their latest bouts in the 42kg weight category at Darnall WMC in Leeds.

Hall, from Stockton Forest, clinched a unanimous decision victory over Leeds’ Nathan Hill after subjecting his opponent to two standing counts in the first round.

South Bank’s Andrews preserved his unbeaten record by beating Cameron Renwick from Newcastle.

About their achievements, Wilson added: “Charlie is really aggressive and strong for his age and has got power in his punches while Henry is a really good, short powerful fighter who is yet to lose a fight.”

York ABC, who train in Layerthorpe, are now hoping to take ten fighters to shows in Halifax and Cleethorpes on April 15.

The club are also hoping to host their own event in York on May 30 with a venue yet to be decided.
