TEN suspected metal thieves were arrested after they were caught with a hoard of copper cables and pipes.
They were arrested just before 3am on Monday by officers on routine patrol on the A19 at Shipton by Beningbrough.
Officers stopped a drop sided lorry and a Ford Transit van. They then found a large quantity of the cables and pipes in the vehicles.
The men, who are all from Hartlepool and aged between 19 and 34, were taken to York police station. They have now been released on conditional bail to allow for further police inquiries.
Anyone who has any information about people committing the theft of metal should phone North Yorkshire Police on 0845 6060247. Crimestoppers can be phoned anonymously on 0800 555 111.
