SKYDIVING, kayaking, whitewater rafting and mountain trekking – these are just some of the activities Press readers have told us about since we launched a search for York’s most adventurous person.

To mark next month’s opening of GO Outdoors’ new store in Foss Bank, the retailer and The Press are organising a competition to find York’s ‘Adventurer Of The Year.’ The winner will receive £250 worth of GO Outdoors vouchers for use at the store and a plaque will be installed there to display their status.

We asked readers to send in pictures of themselves enjoying an outdoor “adventure” and explain why they think they should win the title, and several strong entries have already been received, including:

• Max Reeves, 24, of Clifton Green, who says he has been rock climbing in Slovenia, horse riding in Portugal and kayaking in the UK, crossed the Sahara desert in Egypt in an unguided jeep safari, discovering Neolithic cave art and artefacts littered through the desert along the way.

He also completed the Yorkshire Three Peaks walk in snowy conditions, wearing a red bag tied over one foot for most of the walk after the sole of a shoe came off in a bog.

Now he is planning to go canyoning in Slovenia, visit Europe’s largest thermal lake in Hungary, enter the caves of Slovakia and camp in the Masurian lake district in Poland.

• Jordan Newton, 21, of Foxwood Lane, Acomb, who says he travelled around the world last year for six months, visiting ten countries and experienced a tandem skydive, bungee jumping, skiing, whitewater rafting and much more.

He said: “I went to New York, Toronto, Los Angeles, New Zealand, Australia, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia and then back to Thailand.

“I did the skydive, skiing and rafting in New Zealand.”

More entries will be feature in coming weeks.

• The deadline for entries is Friday, April 29. A shortlist will then be drawn up by judges from GO Outdoors and The Press, from which a winner will be selected.

To enter, email a picture of yourself embarking on your adventure to mike.laycock@thepress.co.uk or post your entry, marked Adventurer Of The Year competition, to Mike Laycock, The Press, 7686 Walmgate, York Y01 5YN, and tell us why you believe you deserve to be crowned York’s Adventurer Of The Year.
