THE pressure was off for City of York Hockey Club’s men’s II as they drew 2-2 with Hull University I in Yorkshire League division one.

York went into the Huntington School clash having secured promotion the previous week and came away with a point despite a largely disappointing performance.

York took the lead from a counter attack, with Lewis Mortimer on hand to supply the finishing touch.

Hull equalised when a ball into the ‘D’ found a man unmarked at the back post to touch home.

York regained the lead when Dave Rogers’ strike from a penalty corner found the net.

After the break, Hull’s pace created good opportunuites and they levelled from a two-on-one chance.

York conclude their season on Saturday at Huntington when they entertain champions Leeds II.

In the same division, City of York III were trounced 4-0 at Harrogate II.

The hosts banged in three goals before the end of the first quarter and Harrogate added the fourth late in the second half. City of York IV went down 4-0 at home to division three leaders Normanby Park I in their final game of the season.

Skipper Tim Lister played as stand-in ’keeper and pulled off a string of saves to keep City in the game and it was 0-0 at half-time.

However, after the break Park turned their superiority into goals.

City of York VI enjoyed a 10-0 triumph in their final home match of the division five north campaign against Bradford II.

Graham Cook netted a first half hat-trick, while Simon Burton and Ed Marsden got two each and further goals were added by Rory Ainslie, Matt Todd and Neil Reader.

Mixed fortunes were endured by City of York VII in their back-to-back fixtures.

They trounced hosts King Cross I 10-1 on Saturday, before crashing 5-1 at Bradford University I on Sunday.

King Cross were seen off with first half goals from Rob Abell, skipper Keith Fletcher, Dave Tompkins and Pat Birch. After the break, City piled on the agony with goals from Dennis Hootton and James Fletcher, plus two apiece from Tompkins and Birch to complete their hat-tricks. City took the lead against Bradford Uni thanks to a well-taken goal by Peter Fitton. However, the students equalised before half-time and, despite superb performance in defence by Pat Birch and Matt Andrews, they ran away with the game in the second half, scoring four times from short corners.

Division six north leaders Ben Rhydding VI beat City of York VIII 4-1. York’s goal came from a well-taken strike from Richard Tanner-Smith.

In division seven north, City of York IX missed a host of chances as they lost 4-0 to derby rivals Acomb II for whom Ben Pottinger was the ace bagging all four goals.

City of York X (Badgers) are on the verge of completing a hat-trick of Development League titles after a 4-1 win at Huddersfield Badgers.

After a goalless first half, debutant Henry Wilson scored from close range and Jack Feasby quickly added another goal before Huddersfield pulled one back on the break.

City of York pressed again and scored through Andrew Abell and Theo Ainslie.

York can clinch the title with victory at home to Bradford on Saturday.
