St John Ambulance stalwart Andrew Furnass has been invested into the Order of St John, in recognition of his contribution to first aid.

Mr Furnass, 47, a York Hospital porter, of Westmoor Lane, Raskelf, received the honour at a ceremony in the order’s 12th century Priory Church in London’s Clerkenwell.

During his 31 years with the St John Ambulance, Mr Furnass, a member of the York and Tadcaster Division, has attended scores of public duties.

Highlights included the Pope’s visit to York in 1982, the Queen’s visit to Royal Ascot at York in 2005, as well as the York Mystery Plays and Christmas services at York Minster.

He said: “I enjoy doing duties at York Races. I’ve been lucky enough to see the Queen and other members of the royal family. The investiture was the highlight of my 31 years service. Being a member of St John Ambulance has its moments - and it’s very satisfying to feel that you have the skills to make a difference.”
