A GANG of men attacked a 20-year-old near the River Ouse in York, leaving him with a broken nose and injuries to his head and face.

The attack was described as nasty by police, who said they are keen to trace a “Good Samaritan” who helped the victim shortly after the incident.

According to investigating officers, the injured man was accompanying a woman next to the River Ouse, between the old Terry’s chocolate factory and the Millennium Bridge, at about 9.45pm on Saturday, March 26. He was then attacked from behind by a group of four or five men.

Police said another man passing by later noticed that the victim was in distress and gave him his jumper to keep him warm, before leaving the scene of the assault.

PC Tania Gillman, of York police, said: “This was a nasty assault which left the victim needing hospital treatment.

“The actions of the man who helped the victim following the incident deserve praise and I am appealing for him to contact the police as he may have information that can help the investigation.

“I am also appealing for anyone else who may have witnessed the assault to contact the police or Crimestoppers.”
