THE Yes To Fairer Votes campaign has published its donor list – you can see it at yestofairervotes.org
It is time the No Campaign came clean and let the British public know who is funding their campaign to preserve the out-dated unrepresentative first-past-the-post system (FPTP).
FPTP, with its gerrymandering, tactical voting, wasted votes, and exclusion of smaller parties, even when they have millions of votes, works against consensus and grown-up politics. It encourages the politics most of us hate – the politics where MPs call shouting abuse at the opposition across the House of Commons a day’s work.
The 64 countries where FPTP is used include: Afghanistan, Bahrain, Burma, Cote D’Ivoire, Kasakhstan, Kenya, North Korea, Pakistan, Russia, Rwanda, Syria, the United States, Yemen and Zimbabwe and a medley of former British colonies.
It doesn’t take a genius to note how many of the countries in the above list have a poor record on democracy and human rights, and a history of political conflict and chicanery at election time.
Why would anyone in their right mind want to stay on the same list as those nations?
Let’s use this opportunity to change our nation for good.
M Kendall, Wheldrake, York.
