A NEW dementia campaign highlights the signs and symptoms of dementia and explains why an early diagnosis is important.

This is a timely reminder that only 39 per cent of people with dementia in York and North Yorkshire have received a formal diagnosis. By understanding the signs and symptoms, we can ensure more people receive an early diagnosis.

There can be many early signs of dementia, from forgetting the names of friends or everyday objects to feeling confused, even when in a familiar environment. I encourage anyone worried about these types of symptoms to see their GP. While there is no cure for dementia, the earlier people seek help and advice, the earlier the right support and treatment can be provided to help slow the progression of the condition.

An early diagnosis allows families to prepare and will help people with dementia to live well. Even though it may be difficult discussing the signs with a loved one, it’s the important first step. If you are worried about signs or symptoms of dementia speak to your GP or visit nhs.uk/dementia or alzheimers.org.uk for more information and support.
