A YORK couple have celebrated their golden wedding at the pub where they met more than half a century ago.

Maureen and Tom Cade, of Clifton, celebrated 50 years of marriage yesterday at The Fox and Roman in Tadcaster Road, where they got to know each other when Maureen, now 71, used to visit with her parents.

“We met because of my parents,” she said. “They knew Tom before I did. That was his local.”

The couple were married in 1961 at St Edward’s Church in Tadcaster Road and remained in York, raising two daughters, Wendy and Susan, while Mr Cade worked for the Co-operative and eventually on the railways, before retiring at the age of 58, though the couple admit their four grandchildren now keep them busy.

The secret to remaining happy together for more than half-a-century was “give and take”, according to Mrs Cabe.
