COUNCILLORS want to take another look at a blueprint designed to combat poor air quality in York.
City of York Council’s executive approved the framework for a low emission strategy for the city earlier this month. They asked officers to draw up a plan for how it could proceed, which would then go out to public consultation.
But it has since been “called in” for further scrutiny by Labour councillors Dave Merrett, Julie Gunnell and Brian Watson.
They claimed it failed to tackle problems surrounding air quality, and a meeting today will decide whether the executive should be asked to look at it again.
Coun Merrett said: “The recommended strategy is hopelessly inadequate, offers no detail on what the expected impact will be and no clear target for when health-based limits are to be achieved.”
Coun Gunnell claimed the current framework would leave the council “vulnerable” to EU fines for not meeting legal requirements on emissions.
