DETECTIVES are continuing to investigate a gang rape in a York park.

It is now four weeks since three men carried out a serious sexual assault on a woman in West Bank Park, and police say they are still hunting the attackers.

Police have yet to make any arrests and they would still like to speak to members of the public who have any information.

They interviewed people in the park one week after the attack, but no one came forward to say they saw the attackers at the time.

Detective Superintendent Lewis Raw, York's area crime commander, said: "This was a very serious sexual assault, which was carried out by strangers, and there were three men involved in the incident.

"As a result of the appeal more information is coming in, but we still need people's help in looking for these three men."

The victim had been walking her two dogs in West Bank Park, Holgate, with her 12-year-old son on Thursday, July 27, at 5pm, when they saw a man wearing a grey or light blue baseball cap hassling two youths.

It is thought the woman may have approached the man, who could be the second suspect in the attack, and was told to "go away".

The mum and son went home, but the victim returned with one of the dogs at 6.30pm, when she was confronted by the gang, forced to the ground and raped.

She also received two wounds to her stomach, possibly made by a four-inch vegetable knife, which was found later.

One of the attackers is described as Afro-Caribbean, 5ft 8in to 5ft 10in tall, stocky, with dreadlocks in a high pony tail, and wore a black polo shirt, dark trousers, and spoke with a Birmingham accent.

The second man is 6ft 1in tall, stocky, and wore a grey or light blue cap, blue t-shirt, pale jeans and white footwear.

The third man is of mixed race, or very tanned, and 5ft 6in tall. He wore a t-shirt.
