WRITING on the day before this year's GCSE results are declared, I predict that yet again there will be an outcry saying that the exams are getting easier.

This is usually put forward by people who have little experience of what the education system actually does today.

Exams today are designed to test students' reasoning and are not a test of memory, as they were when I took my exams in the 1960s.

Do not blame students or their teachers for these changes, as they have little or no control over what is in the syllabus. They are forced to produce better results by a Government-controlled organisation such as Ofsted, or pay a price.

If this country wants to have a better education system, then surely it would be best to have practitioners in some form of control instead of politicians or Whitehall mandarins.

If some of your critical correspondents are not aware of what is required, I would refer them to the exam boards' websites and challenge them to try out these exams in ten different subject areas.
