MISS Philips from Bath is mistaken in her letter about Christmas lights in York (Scrooge is alive and kicking in York, August 19).

In previous years, the council has funded some of the city's lighting displays and this will again be the case for Christmas 2006. The level of council funding for Christmas lights will remain unchanged.

However, some streets have had additional lighting which was paid for by sponsorship from private businesses. This sponsorship has been withdrawn this year.

City of York Council, as local residents well know, has limited resources and there is no provision in the budget to increase spending on Christmas lights above that spent last year - to do so would take funds from other services.

Having spoken to councillors in Bath, it appears that Miss Philips is also incorrect about Christmas displays in that city.

The Liberal Democrat group in Bath has established a successful Christmas market, despite opposition from Conservative councillors.
