CAN anyone help in my quest to find more information about William Clayton, Schoolmaster of Appleton Roebuck, who started teaching there in 1889?

He retired in 1932 and stayed in the village until his death in 1948. His wife, Mary, also taught at the school and I would be grateful if any family members or others with particular memories of the couple would get in touch with me.

Mr Clayton had a remarkable career and through the NUT and West Riding County Council was involved in the development of education in rural areas.

He was awarded an OBE in 1932 and the school log book during his years gives lots of useful information for the history of both school and the village, particularly during the First World War.

I am working on the history of Appleton Roebuck and would be delighted to hear from anyone who remembers Mr and Mrs Clayton. Photographs would be a bonus and would be speedily copied and returned.
