FORMER Fulford Golf Club player James Mason broke the amateur course record with a seven-under-par 65 as he helped Rotherham win the Yorkshire first division team championship for a third straight year at Fulford.

He had eight birdies and one bogey in a round that beat the previous amateur record of 66 set in 1989 by Gary Harland. The professional record is 62 posted in the Benson & Hedges tournament by current European Ryder Cup captain Ian Woosnam.

A Fulford member from 2000-03 while studying at York University, Mason also had the best aggregate of 99 (65 34) after the event was trimmed to 27 holes as rain and lightning closed in.

Pike Hills GC's Adam Newton, a member of the Fulford green-keeping staff, won the best first round prize (68) not counting Mason's overall score. Pike Hills finished third with Selby sixth and hosts Fulford 11th to retain their places in the first division for next year.
