A HORRIFIED mum has described how her son's video game speakers exploded all over her kitchen - but a store would not recall the product.

Selene Lagan, 37, described how ten-year old Jamie had finished playing with a combined PSP console and speaker set minutes before pieces of plastic were blasted all up the wall.

The anxious mum said she was stunned that the Argos chain, from where the product was bought, was not taking any action.

Selene, an administration secretary, said: "I dread to think what might have happened if Jamie had been playing with the PSP at the time.

"I'm worried there might be a problem and it may need investigating in case this happens again and a child is seriously hurt."

Jamie's dad, David Lagan, 41, a prison officer, had bought the PSP and combined speaker system for Jamie on July 31, and the schoolboy had been playing with it in the kitchen of the family home in Reighton Avenue, Rawcliffe, for a couple of hours.

Selene said: "My husband came into the kitchen and noticed it felt a bit hot, so he put it back into its box.

"But then suddenly there was a huge bang and bits of plastic and batteries blew out the back of the speaker system.

"Some of the debris got on to David's arm, but luckily he brushed it all off quickly. The rest of it stuck to my kitchen wall."

The following day, Mr Lagan took the system back to the Argos store in York.

Staff told him the problem may have been that the batteries had leaked.

But Selene said: "The batteries came with the product and they had not been leaking when we checked them."

Argos replaced the machine with a new PSP console and speaker system and sent the damaged product off for testing.

But Selene said she called the company's head office to check whether the product was being recalled and was informed the explosion had probably been a one-off.

The company sent a letter to the family apologising for the incident but didn't state whether further action would be taken.

The letter read: "I am very concerned to hear of the fault you reported with the above product and we apologise for any distress caused.

"Please be reassured we take safety very seriously and all products once selected for inclusion in the catalogue are appraised by our quality assurance department, including ensuring they comply with the relevant UK and EU safety standards."

The letter added: "The information you have provided will enable us to monitor the performance of the product and take any steps appropriate in the future."
