IT would be easy to accuse a cash-strapped city council which spent nearly £18,000 on corporate hospitality last year of wasting money. Easy, but unfair.

When you think how much even a wedding reception costs these days, £18,000 for a full year of civic parties, mayoral functions and other hospitality doesn't seem that much. Especially in a year which saw Royal Ascot in York.

If anything, city bosses are to be congratulated on how frugal they were. And we don't say that often.
