I AM writing this letter in the safety of my home after fighting, once again, the mortal dangers that many people have to endure.

I thought that I would share my experience with the readers.

I have lived in York for all of my 61 years, seven months and 19 days precisely, and would like to continue a little bit longer, thank you.

Most of those years, I have been a very confident cyclist wearing the appropriate clothing, i.e. fluorescent vest, cycle helmet, cycle goggles etc.

I look a bit like Eddie the Eagle, and certainly can be seen on the road, so why do people in secluded metal bubbles (cars) think that we are invisible?

My two granddaughters certainly don't think that I am invisible, as they cringe when they see me for fear of their friends shouting, "Who's the minger on the bike?"

Cyclists are in danger through thoughtless drivers not giving enough room when turning left; and many don't even indicate any more.

Bus drivers are the worst culprits, cutting you off sometimes by mounting the pavement. Please slow down and look in both your mirrors to see who is on the road.

Do not forget: York is a cycling city. It has been since after the Roman emperor Constantine's wheel fell off his chariot.

We were here first. You automobiles came much later on.

Now if some smart aleck wants to write in to defend the motorist, I am also a motorist.

I care about everyone going about their daily life, and hope that they have a safe one.

So when you set off on your journey each day, think bike, pedestrians, and everyone else on the planet!

Christine Oldfield, Malton Road, York.
