DESPITE some inclement weather over the last week, local fisheries have been in brilliant form with record-nudging weights recorded in matches.

Dave Pollitt (Hirst Tackle) topped the midweek open at the Willows with an amazing bag of 127lb 8oz, taken in just three hours.

Drawn on peg 60 on Goldrush, his charge to success was based on a cat meat attack at eight metres. Taking advantage of a spare peg to his left he hauled out a procession of carp to 6lb.

Second place was secured by a more modest bag of 91lb as Paul Gallagher (Willows) continued his great run of form on his own venue from peg 35. Fishing pellet at 16 metres to the island he took carp to 4lb.

Others: Stuart Wilson (Leeds Angling Centre) 75-12-0 and Paul Clark (Hirst Tackle) 71-8-0.

The action in Saturday's Ultimate Henglesport open at the Willows was restricted by a howling gale.

A few anglers were able to take advantage of tree cover, none more so than winner Andy Barker (Sensas Walton). Drawn on peg 48 on Goldrush, he was able to fish at a full 16 metres with a following wind and took carp to 6lb at full range and close in to his left.

In a tight frame his 66lb 8oz was just enough to see off Steve Raper (Hirst Tackle), who bagged 63lb 8oz from peg 39 on meat at ten metres.

Others: Tony Hewson (Leeds Angling Centre) 58-8-0, Paul Gallagher (Willows) 55-0-0, Stuart Wilson (Leeds Angling Centre) and Stan Jeffries (Leeds Angling Centre) both 51-0-0.

Cedar Lake at the Oaks, Sessay, produced its best ever open match at the weekend with the top five anglers all hitting the magical ton.

The key to such huge nets of relatively small carp is to catch quickly and all the centurions used the same tactics. Fishing down the track at full depth, the fish are gradually tempted closer and up in the water by regular, but sparing, loose feed.

Gareth Drury (Oaks/HAS) got them boiling on peg four and was able to whip out 118lb 8oz of fish to 3lb on caster and pellet fished just a foot deep, three metres from the bank.

Second place in an amazing match that saw a lowest section winning weight of 85lb, went to Bill Brierley (Garbolino Elton) who also got the carp competing for his pellets up in the water at peg 50. His net of 103lb 10oz was just enough to see off Mark Calvert (Garbolino Elton) who had 101lb 8oz.
