I WOULD like to draw attention to the present new width of the parking bays outside St George’s School.

Having used these myself for more than 30 years, I know that the driver stepping out of his or her car often takes their life into their hands, as one has to step into the path of travelling traffic (not to forget cyclists, who have no lane here, thus opening car doors are a hazard for them).

It appears that someone has measured the minimum feasible width for a car, in widening the pavement outside St George’s, without factoring in the safe passage for any driver leaving their parked car.

I do feel, as stated in the information session at St George’s about the tinkering with Fishergate, that these alterations are part of a determination to alter things under the umbrella of “improved safety for pedestrians and cyclists” without working out the real pros and cons.

I say this as a pedestrian, cyclist and driver who took her young children to St George’s and Fishergate schools by foot for a decade. Those new parking bays are an accident waiting to happen.
