THE Liberal candidate for rural west York is incorrect in suggesting that the Explore Centres provide “something for everyone” (Letters, February 24).

They provide nothing for music lovers, who must now rely on York St John University. They provide far less for art lovers and lovers of literature than did the former libraries.

The sell-off of so many important reference works has deprived me, and I dare say one or two other residents besides, of necessary books which must now be ordered (at some cost and inconvenience) from other libraries.

Judged by through put alone, the Explore Centres are a great success.

As a democrat, I concede that if this is what the majority want, its provision is justified. Only count me out.

The best thing about the Explore Centres is the front-line staff.

Their unfailing helpfulness, cheerfulness and courtesy make a visit ever a pleasure. As Richard Brown eschews scoring political points, I am sure he will agree that praise belongs to them collectively and uniquely, and not to any party or contender for political preferment.
