THE thought has been tossed around several times over the years since it was thrown up in the 1960s, so good on Ann Holt for bringing the concrete monstrosity up again and suggesting that Stonebow be demolished to reveal the beautiful Central Methodist Church and the Minster in the background (Letters, February 8).
To my knowledge, a lot of the businesses that opened there have struggled I remember the opening night of the Bierkeller within that building back in the early 1970s; a great night was had, litre glasses of good German bier served up by buxom wenches in traditional dress, dancing on the tables. It was short-lived, unfortunately, and soon closed down.
Other eyesores which pull the city down are the Bonding Warehouse, and the hotel in Piccadilly on the junction with Coppergate and Pavement.
These two properties need taking over by the council as the owners appear unwilling to put them into use.
A more recent eyesore to is the old St Lawrence Working men’s club.
