THE tribute to the “Magnificent Seven” from John A Hudson brought back great memories of the De Grey Rooms; it had a wonderful dance floor, and Johnny Sutton’s band was great to listen to (Letters, February 12).

Better than any records, it had a great beat; it was a proper night out for York citizens.

Who would have thought that one of York’s local lads would go so far in his musical career? What an accolade for him.

I also went to the Rialto cinema on a Sunday to listen to the John Barry Seven.

His father, Jack Prendergast, used to talk to my dad at the Edinburgh Arms during the interval.

When I remember the talented musicians we had in York during the 1950s, how lucky we were. Dance halls were super to go to.

There was the Assembly Rooms with the Assembly Players with Bob Hals band, my old boss on piano, Eric Betts; then the Drill Hall, Clifton Ballroom, Folk Hall New Earswick, Albany, Rowntree’s Ballroom in the dining block, City Arms Fawcett Street, Cats Whiskers (1960) and the Railway Institute on New Year’s Eve.
