THE North Yorkshire Brewing Company was founded in 1989 in Middlesborough. Ten years later it relocated to old dairy buildings at Pinchinthorpe Hall, a moated house in the North York Moors National Park near Guisborough.
The hall was the home of the Lee family for many centuries until 1957 and is now a privately owned country house hotel. A wide range of cask and bottle-conditioned beers is produced, all made from organically grown ingredients and water from the house’s own spring. This week we feature Cereal Killer, the brewery’s take on the wheat beer style.
The colour is a very pale straw yellow and there is a moderate but brief head. The aroma is light and subtle with bread, stewed apple and clove, along with a hint of bubblegum, a feature of many Bavarian weissebiers.
The flavour is slightly sweet with a soft edge of lemon zest, a touch of vanilla, some light herbs and spices, and a drying, orangey hop note at the finish.
A refreshing, easy-drinking wheat beer that falls somewhere between the more robust German weissebier and spicier Belgian witbier styles.
