A clinic for patients with an irregular heart rhythm has been set up at Bridlington Hospital.

Atrial fibrillation is a non life-threatening condition, but can cause heart palpitation, dizziness, shortness of breath and in some cases lead to a stroke.

Now a regular Friday morning clinic will be held in the outpatient’s department at Bridlington, to run alongside the existing consultant cardiology clinic.

Specialist nurse Annette Squires, who runs the clinic said: “Quite often individuals are not aware that an irregular pulse can mean that they have this condition.

“Although it is linked to several cardiac conditions, atrial fibrillation can also occur in otherwise normal hearts. The main risk associated with atrial fibrillation is an increased risk of stroke, which can have such devastating consequences.

“The aim of the clinic is to have rapid access for newly diagnosed patients or those who are strongly suspected of having intermittent atrial fibrillation.”
