MUSIC critics are raving about the ravishing debut by Anna Calvi, the 22-year-old London singer-songwriter, whose eponymous debut is little short of aural seduction.

The sleeve shows Calvi’s lips bright red and her name spelt out in a gold chain, which matches the OTT nature of the collection of nine songs. From the filmic opener which recalls the mood of Paris/Texas, we take a journey which displays Calvi’s many influences, from flamenco and Maria Callas to James Bond and David Lynch.

Her voice is dramatic and at times cavernous, revealing echoes of Siouxsie Sioux and Chrissie Hynde and even Shirley Bassey on the Goldfinger-esque Suzanne & I. There’s a lot of style here, and substance too, but she needs to turn down the heat a bit if she’s going to stay the course.
