YORK’S title hopes in the Hebden Bowls Trophy ended when they were surprisingly whitewashed by Selby 97-71.
The game was decided over the last three ends and third-placed York folded – letting in 22 shots and only scoring five.
Tony Bryan’s rink led 21-8 with seven ends to play, only for Brian Smith’s team to win all but one of the run-in and take it 24-21.
Trevor Grasby’s team had a healthy 14-4 lead after 11 ends and, although Eric Hodgson’s home rink got back to 16-15, the Selby team won 25-16.
York looked on course for a winning rink in Selby as Jim Robertson’s team led 21-16 with three to play, but Howard Martin’s team won three successive ends to finish 23-21.
Geoff Birch’s team led Geoff Walker’s rink 17-3 after ten ends on the way to a 25-13 win.
Selby are now fifth, only one point behind fourth-placed New Earswick, eyeing a top-four spot and a place in the end of season Hebden Challenge Trophy.
New Earswick endured a bad day, losing 111-41 to Featherstone.
At home, Brian Birch’s team were only one shot behind at 10-9 after 14 ends but lost 27-9.
Phil Reeves’ team doubled their shots tally on the last end when they picked up a five but they lost 28-10.
Away, Bob Howland’s team lost 26-9 and Gordon Storey’s team, despite winning four of the last six ends, went down 30-13.
