IT IS encouraging that a senior member of staff at the council is prepared, albeit on a qualified basis, to recommend approval for the Wheel in the Museum Gardens on a temporary basis.

Too often the views of the local dinosaurs such as York Civic Trust, English Heritage and the York Georgian Society have held sway and planning officers have capitulated in the face of their opposition.

However, it is the democratically elected members of the council who will make the decision. Let us hope that they don’t cave in as they have done so often in the past.
