THIEVES burgled three bungalows and tried to break into two more during a crime spree in North Yorkshire.

One of the victims was aged 100 and the other properties were also all occupied by pensioners.

Detectives are appealing for witnesses following the burglaries in Great Ouseburn, near Boroughbridge, on Tuesday between 7pm and 8pm.

At each of the three bungalows targeted, the small top window was left open and the burglars reached inside and opened larger windows to gain access.

Detective Inspector Heather Pearson, of Harrogate CID, said: “Burglary is a particularly distressing crime for anyone to have to endure.

However, targeting homes and property belonging to elderly residents is particularly ruthless and heartless.

“At this time of life people deserve to live in peace and without fear of becoming a victim in their own home.”

The thieves stole gold cuff-links and collectors coins from one property and medical bags containing bandages and lotion from another. Nothing was taken from the third home.

The cuff-links are described as having a rough surface with a diagonal stripe across them. The coins included florins, thru’penny pieces, sixpences, a medallion and an American coin. All coins were in a blue presentation case. Anyone with information should phone 0845 6060247 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
