FANCY finding out what your Viking name is, taking the Runic Trail to Valhalla, having a go at some war-gaming and writing your own Norse saga, all topped off with a meal of Warrior’s Broth and Sigurd’s Smorgasbord?

Then you need to get down to Explore York Library Learning Centre on Sunday for its Viking Day.

There’s a chance to meet Simon Grey, local author of Viking stories, in the Long Hall (normally the Marriott Room), who will tell the real story of the Battles of Fulford and Stamford Bridge. Simon will also be signing copies of his books The Last Vikings and The Return Of Sigurd The Dragon Slayer.

Families can meet Simon at noon and 2pm; sessions last about 45 minutes and there is a charge on the door of £3 per family.

By following the Runic Trail around the building, and learning about Viking life at the same time, ten lucky families could win places on one of Simon’s regular Viking walks. Also in the Long Hall will be Viking-themed creative writing sessions.

In the Hearth And Home area (the children’s library) there will be stories for younger children, who can also colour Viking runes and designs, and in the Workshop (Garden Room) there’s a chance to make a clay pendant, at a cost of £1 for materials.

You can also test your grasp of history with the Viking quiz, or have a go at wargaming with the help of experienced wargamers. All the sessions, except those in the Long Hall, are on a drop-in basis.
