A NEW community group is being sought for an environmental campaign in York.

The Green Neighbourhood Challenge asks groups to reduce their carbon footprint, by the end of 2011.

It raises awareness of low-carbon lifestyles with the aim of claiming the title of North Yorkshire’s Greenest Neighbourhood Team.

Groups should have at least ten members and will be recruited from each local authority area in York, Selby, Ryedale, Scarborough, Hambleton, Harrogate and Richmond. Each team will receive details of their carbon footprint and a plan of action to cut it.

They will receive advice and support with a prize to the group which has reduced their carbon footprint the most.

The challenge is funded by Yorkshire and Humber Improvement and Efficiency Partnership and managed by Sustainability 4 Yorkshire and the Stockholm Environment Institute at the University of York.

Jacqui Warren, City of York Council sustainability officer, said: “Full results of the challenge last year will be published shortly and show real reductions in local people’s carbon footprints.

“We are excited about expanding this into another York community and widening its scope to help us tackle climate change.”
