THE 18th century influx of rich and fashionable people to York will be the subject of the annual Harry Ward memorial lecture this week.
Peter Brown, director of York Civic Trust, will relate how York became the focus of “polite society” in Georgian England, leading to the building of many of the city’s most handsome buildings such as the Assembly Rooms.
Mr Brown said: “Throughout the 18th century, the City of York experienced a huge expansion, although not to accommodate commerce or industry, but to cater for the needs of so-called “polite society”.
The talk will be hosted by the Gild of Freemen of the City and is open to anyone interested in learning more about a key period in York’s development as a city.
The event takes place at Bedern Hall in Goodramgate on Thursday.
Advance tickets cost £8 per person and include wine and supper. Further details are available from Hazel Hague on 01904 423878.
