FAMILY members are hoping to keep the memory of one of their ancestors alive by funding repairs to a historic stone bearing her name.
Mrs William Sessions laid one of the foundation stones of York’s Salvation Army citadel in Gillygate in 1882.
Noticing how the stone has deteriorated over time, her relatives contacted the Salvation Army last year, offering to pay for restoration work.
As the citadel is a Grade II listed building, planning permission had to be sought and a decision is currently awaited.
The stone reads: “This stone was laid by Mrs William Sessions on the 10th July 1882.”
