Gearing up for new cycle centre at York Station

First published in News

PLANS have been drawn up for a new cycle centre at York Station on the site of a former parcels base.

Bishopthorpe-based Cycle Heaven has applied to City of York Council to set up the business, which would sell, hire ands repair bikes, at the former Red Star parcels office, with a decision on the proposals set to be made next month.

A statement submitted to the council by the firm said it wanted to create a “smart, modern retail unit” and build on the work carried out under the Cycling City York initiative to boost the number of people using bikes in the city.

Surely they could have knocked down this building and created approximately Ten more Car Parking spaces. The shortsightedness of coyc makes me despair sometimes.

The Hub Station by Lendal Bridge is up and running. Secure cycle parking for one pound per day, plus rescued and recycled bikes for sale.
The new Cycle Heaven outlet at York station will be useful for outward bound rail commuters to drop bikes off for servicing/repair in the morning, and collect them in the evening.
Useful also to have a bike hire scheme there, as the one formerly run nearby, by the station car hire firm seems to have fallen by the wayside.
The separately announced link from the station to the nearby riverside path will encourage more cycle commuting and relieve demand on the long stay car park. Touring cyclists arriving with their bikes by train, can use it to safely reach the Hub Station's secure parking.
All this is beginning to sound like joined up thinking......

I use Cycle Heaven and they don't do "same day" unless you are very lucky. Do a good job, although they do make sarky remarks if you have a cheap Halfords model. Despite the fact that I have had two stolen!

Well you would if you rode in your usual manner down the left of stationary traffic where there's no cycle lane. Riding down the pavement and through red lights in your special Harry Potter low visibility cape. How about after that you and your Chopper can take us on in our builders truck on our daily 50 mile commute home, you’ll have to carry the same dead weight as us though which is a 20 stone labourer, half a ton of cement, three weeks worth of old newspapers and at least fifty half empty lemonade bottles.

Quite frankly I'm disappointed with both the quality & quantity of the comments on this article.
I'm off into town to park my bike in front of a bus again, that should stir up some interest.
