MORE people have been dicing with death by walking or playing on York’s frozen River Ouse.

Last night, two teenagers – including one on a bike – were seen between Tower Gardens and the Bonding Warehouse, near Skeldergate Bridge. Police were called and the youngsters fled when officers arrived.

Others have been seen on the ice below Ouse Bridge, and several people have written their names in the ice.

North Yorkshire Police say they were also called to the River Nidd near Mother Shipton’s Cave at Knaresborough several times yesterday, and there have been numerous reports of children playing on the frozen Rawcliffe Lake in York.

A police spokesman said: “Stepping onto areas of frozen water is extremely dangerous and potentially fatal.

“Not only are these foolish individuals placing themselves in perilous danger, they are also risking the safety of those who come to their aid if they get in difficulty.

“We urge parents to help drill this message home before it is too late.”
