There would be no need to demolish the Parliament Street toilet block, Coun Alexander (The Press, September 24), if our councillors would listen to the people of York and return the main market from its back street site in Newgate to its historic site in Parliament Street.
The “splash palace” could be refurbished and used as the market administration centre as well as housing the meat, fish and cheese stalls which require running water.
The Newgate site could then house the overpriced continental and other markets which seem to be an attraction to tourists but of very little benefit to York residents.
I can also advise that the building has been nominated for consideration on the York Local List (yorklocallist.org.uk) which, it is hoped, will one day be adopted by the council to give some protection to those places and buildings valued by the people of York but not considered important enough for an official listing.
