A PLAQUE dedicated to one of an East Yorkshire town’s favourite characters has been unveiled at the house where he lived.

The brass plate has been placed on the front wall of the home of Alfie Hutchinson in Pocklington, where Mr Hutchinson, who died last July aged 65, lived for nine years.

It reads: “Alfie Hutchinson House. Tell ‘em nowt. 1944-2010. Keep on laughing. Alfie”, and comes after thousands of people signed up to tribute sites on Facebook.

“Tell ‘em nowt” is a reference to one of the phrases Alfie, who had learning difficulties, would shout as he walked through the town centre. The plaque has been put up after a campaign to name Pocklington’s library after him was turned down by East Riding of Yorkshire Council.

It was bought using some of the £1,200 raised at Alfie’s funeral, which was attended by more than 500 people.

Ann Simpson, manager of supported living services at Sherbutt House, which ran the building Alfie lived in, said: “We have always called it ‘Alfie’s house’ and I’ve seen people looking at the plaque already so people know now where he lived.”
