AN ARCHITECT who bought nine bottles of champagne for York councillors who turned down his planning application to build three homes has given one to a couple raising money for charity.

Matthew Laverack’s plans for the homes in Netherwoods, Strensall, went to appeal, where he said they had been dismissed on a technicality but the overall decision had been in his favour, with costs to be awarded against the council.

He gave the bottle destined for Coun Roger Pierce to Kath and Phil Burton, who raise money for cot death research after losing their first daughter, Julia, in 1979. The couple have raised nearly £70,000 since then, including £2,000 this year.
