MOVIE fans took a step back in time to the golden age of cinema as a historic York property turned back the big screen clock.

Classic films from the Second World War era formed the centrepiece of the start of the second annual Silver Screen Week at Fairfax House, with the opening gala last night featuring the 1943 Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman classic Casablanca.

The red-carpet event also saw visitors being invited to dress up as their favourite film characters from the 1940s, with musicians from York accompanying the screening with nostalgic wartime music.

The Silver Screen event is reviving memories of the era from 1921 to 1965 when the Georgian town house in Castlegate was the home of the St George’s Cinema.

The week will feature six cinematic favourites of the 1940s, including Goodbye Mr Chips, Citizen Kane, Mrs Miniver, Arsenic And Old Lace and Meet Me In St Louis.

As part of the event, Buster Keaton’s 1927 silent movie The General will be shown at the City Screen on Sunday. For more details, log on to fairfaxhouse.co.uk.

Tickets can be booked by phoning 01904 655543 or calling in at Fairfax House during its opening hours.
