A CHARACTER from a galaxy far, far away drew surprised stares as he marched through York’s city centre.

The distinctive figure of an Imperial Stormtrooper from the Star Wars movie series was spotted in Davygate by photographer Tom Smith yesterday.

It was not clear whether the feared intergalactic warrior was seeking old enemies Han Solo or Luke Skywalker, providing an escort for the Dark Side’s Darth Vader, or possibly feeling peckish and checking out the York Festival of Food & Drink.

Or was the clue in the fact he was spotted in Davygate, once the home of another sci-fi villain, in the form of a Dalek which stood guard outside a former shop in the street?
