A NURSERY based in a women’s open prison near York is proving so popular that parents in the area are queuing up to get a place for their children.

The Acorn Family Centre, at Askham Grange Open Prison, is the first of its kind in Yorkshire to be opened by the world-famous children’s charity Barnado’s.

The nursery caters for 22 children from babies to three-year-olds, including children of residents of the prison, and youngsters living in and around Askham Richard.

Martin Narey, Barnardo’s chief executive, himself a former head of the prison service, said: “The fact that parents from the local community and prison office staff choose to send their children to this fantastic nursery is another indication of the high standards that are in place.

“There is such commitment and determination here to set the children on a happier start in life, I am sure their success will grow and grow.

“I am delighted that Barnardo’s is working in partnership with Askham Grange to provide the best possible start in life for the babies and young children who attend this nursery.”

Marcella Goligher, Askham Grange governor, said: “The nursery, which is part of our mother and baby unit facilities, plays a key role in the rehabilitation of our resident mums. “We know that family and building positive relationships are major factors in the resettlement of women and reducing re-offending. The celebratory event also reflects the importance of partnership working.”

Barnardo’s said it offered a full day care service at the Acorn Family Centre enabling prison residents to leave their children “with confidence, supporting them to prepare for effective and sustainable resettlement into the community by enabling access to interventions to reduce the risk of re-offending on release.”
