MORE than 40 Yorkshire artists will present their work at a major exhibition to be staged at City of York Council’s proposed new home.

The display, which takes place at West Offices between Saturday, May 22 and Saturday, May 29, will raise thousands of pounds to build a new children’s home in Nepal, as the show is being organised by the charity New Futures Nepal.

It will also be the first opportunity for the public to look round part of the historic complex in Station Rise, before a proposed refurbishment.

A centrepiece of the show will be a stunning portrait of Nirmala, one of the women who have been helped by the charity.

Artist and charity trustee Colin Culley said it had been overwhelmed by the generosity of artists who had flocked to offer their work free.

He said: “Many are locally based, but some are from as far afield as France. All artworks on display will be for sale and every penny raised will go straight to the charity. It is a fantastic chance for people in York to invest in some original art.”

He said 50 pieces of work – ranging from original landscapes and animal portraits to ceramics and greeting cards – would be on display.

Entry to the exhibition, to be held in one of the bridge offices over the former railway tracks, is free, but visitors are welcome to make donations. New Futures Nepal is aiming to raise £100,000 to build the new home for children and vulnerable people in one of the poorest regions of the world.

Meanwhile, another venture for the charity, the Harrison Trek Around Castle Howard, is planning another event. This year’s trek, held by S Harrisons builders, takes place on Sunday, June 20 when walkers of all ages can enjoy a choice of two, five and 15-mile treks around the Howardian Hills. Details about the art exhibition, sale, and the trek, is available from challenge4nepal.org
