DREAMS of a teenager will unfold into the real deal for York’s greens king Simon Dyson today.

The most successful North Yorkshire professional makes his bow among the world’s elite in the Masters, the first Major of the year.

Declared Dyson: “This is the realisation of a dream for me.

“Playing at Augusta in the Masters has been something I’ve always wanted to do even before I turned pro. This is one of the best courses in the world. For a golf professional it is the supreme test.”

Ever since he was a youngster making his way in golf, where currently he is among the leading 60 players in the world, the York-born ace cherished many an aspiration.

He has achieved many already – countless crowns as an amateur, including a Walker Cup appearance for his country.

In his decade in the paid ranks, he has won the Asian Tour Order of Merit – in his first year as a rookie no less – and has since captured no fewer than four titles on the European Tour headed by the coveted Alfred Dunhill Links Championship at St Andrews last year, a success which catapulted him into the world’s top 50 players and sealed his place in the Masters.

Dyson has played in several Opens, including hitting the opening tee shot in the 2005 championships, again at St Andrews, the sport’s spiritual haven.

The world number 56 also represented Great Britain and Ireland with distinction in two leading team competitions the Seve Trophy and the Royal Trophy.

And in his first appearance in the USPGA championship, the last of the four Majors in the calendar year, he was joint sixth and leading Briton three years ago.

However, inked indelibly at the top of his wish-list has always been to appear in the Masters at the revered Augusta National course in Georgia. Today, the 32-year-old accomplishes that dream.

It is a million strokes away from his first days as a youngster hauling a bag of clubs almost bigger than him along the lengthy approach road towards his first lesson at Malton & Norton Golf club.

This afternoon at 3.57pm British Summer Time, Dyson will stand on the first tee of the opening Tea Olive hole on the majestically manicured Augusta course paired with former US Open champion Michael Campbell of New Zealand and America’s Ben Crane.

Dyson has always wanted to compete against the best and today he will do that in what he termed the utmost examination of a golfer’s ability.

Dyson told The Press: “It was always my aim to get into the top 50 last year, which I did and which I knew would get me into the Masters.

“Now I am here and I am going to enjoy and make the most of the experience.”
