MOTORISTS faced traffic chaos when an overturned lorry closed a major roundabout on the Selby bypass on the same day a major road into the town shut for three weeks.

Police were called to the Whinny Hagg roundabout near Thorpe Willoughby at 8.30am yesterday following reports an articulated lorry had flipped over.

The roundabout, which is at the junction of the A63 and A1238, was not fully re-opened until after 5pm, due to a diesel spillage on the carriageway.

A spokesman for North Yorkshire Police said the lorry’s 62-year-old male driver sustained minor head and leg injuries in the incident.

Commuters were dealt a double dose of disruption thanks to the closure of New Street – one of the major routes into Selby.

The road has been shut to allow essential maintenance work to traffic lights in New Street.
