I would like to know where the City of York Council spokeswoman (Letters, April 3) gets her facts from.

Most York people would love to see the local market back in its old home of Parliament Street, with the visiting markets given a special place in Newgate. If the local market will detract from the street’s appeal, why don't the visiting markets also detract?

There seems to be a visiting market there on almost a weekly basis, usually with overpriced and, in some cases, inferior goods. Is the local market considered below this standard in some way?

Why won’t York council give back to its loyal traders a place of prominence in the city?

This would also solve the problem of what to do with the “Splash Palace”. Besides having a support and admin role it could be converted to house the fish, meat and cheese stalls which require a running water supply.

When abroad, especially in Mediterranean countries, the local market is always in a prominent position and is always full of tourists, and tourists are the only people the city seems to cater for nowadays.
